Sawfish movements on Andros

Here is an quick update from Dr. Dean Grubbs on his recent research on West Andros.  Some really neat stuff (although with all of those sharks, makes me a little wary to survey our reefs there).

We dart tagged and took genetic samples from 54 sharks and rays on this trip (17 blacktip sharks, 19 lemon sharks – including 3 recaptures tagged two years ago in the same area, 7 Caribbean sharpnose sharks, 5 bonnethead sharks, 3 nurse sharks, 1 tiger shark, 1 southern stingray, and 1 smalltooth sawfish).

We tagged the sawfish with a towed SPOT satellite tag that will stay on for 6 months.  We keep receiving data from her as she moves between Timber Creek, the back-country and and Pumpion Lake (see the second slide above).
We also surgically implanted an acoustic transmitter that will be picked up on receivers for 10 years.
We installed 4 receivers at Andros: 1 where Cutoff Creek meets Wide Opening, 1 where the River Lees meets Turner Sound, 1 where the two creeks meet where we tagged sawfish Nadia, and 1 at the back-country cut where sawfish Blair was tagged.

My lab’s interdisciplinary pursuits provide for a multi-faceted understanding of environmental change in the coastal realm. We are ecologists, asking questions that span population, community, ecosystem and evolutionary sub-disciplines. We often use a food web based perspective, exploring top-down (e.g., predation) and bottom-up (e.g., nutrient excretion) mechanisms by which animals affect ecosystem processes. All of our efforts are framed within a broader outreach framework, directly integrating science and education, using approaches such as this website.
