Do coastal ecosystems buffer storm surges?

Hurricane Sandy stimulated a lot of discussion regarding the connection between coastal ecosystem degradation (dunes, marshes, and reefs) and property damage. This past week, the NY Times featured an especially objective, and informative view of this discussion. It’s worth a read.
